Solar-Cover Reels?

August 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

We own a Kayak rectangular above-ground pool. Pool measures 16′ x 32′
with a 2′-wide deck on three sides and an 8′-wide deck on one end.
We’ve been using a solar cover (see my other post about the plastic
failing after three years), with a lower-end reel system. The aluminum
multi-section pole has been fine, but the hard-plastic
handles/posts/bearing-ends have been breaking on us since the first
summer. Luckily the company has been good about sending us replacement
parts well past the 1-year warranty, but since it looks like I have to
replace the solar cover anyway, I’m looking for recommendations on a
better reel. I don’t know if part of the problem is using a heavy
(16-mil — I was wrong in my previous post about it being 12-mil) solar
cover so that it puts a strain on the reel, but you’d think that the
reel would be made tough enough to handle that.
We like the feature of this one where once rolled up we can lift the
reel/cover and move it over onto the 2′-wide end deck so that it’s

pretty much out of the way, and the “posts” that held it up are then
removable so that they’re not in the way of jumping in/walking around
the deck. And in the winter we just lift up the whole reel, with the
cover rolled onto it, take it into our garage where I have two
ropes/pulleys to pull it up to the ceiling and store it.
I would like something that works the same way, but where the
handles/bearings/plastic ends are more reliable.
Thanks!
Dana
