High copper levels in pool

May 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I have a 20′ round pool that has a problem…. The water had a blue
tint to it this year and I had the water tested and it came back with a
high level of copper in it.
I disconnected the heater and ran the pump and changed the filter media
out about 7 times (collected a blue tint…like copper sulfate) and now
the pool “looks” good to go.
Did the copper come from the heater? If so…should I just run the
water through the heater until the loose copper finally gets purged
from the system? The heat exchanger is not leaking and the heater is
functioning fine. The heater is 9 years old and I live in the Cleveland
Ohio area.
Heat exchangers get pretty pricey..if it needs to be erplaced would it
be the better route just to replace the entire heater?
Thanks..all ideas and suggestions are appreciated!
Mike

I had the same thing happen to me last year. I had kept the PH at 7.2 only to
find out I was corroding my heater core to the point I had to replace it. You
may want to take your heater apart and look at the amount of corrosion.
Now I keep my PH at 7.4 - 7.6 and haven’t had any more problems.
If you need stain removal use Ascorbic acid followed my Metal X. You can find
both at your local pool supply store.
