Our salt generator used to run at 7% for 8 hours a day and keep the
chlorine level above 1.0 ppm. I took a sample to the pool store a
couple weeks ago, and they said the Total Alkalinity was too low and
sold me some “Total A” to bring it up. (I wish I had read the threads
about Baking Soda before I went to the store).
Since adding the Total A, we are running the generator at 50 to 75 %
and it isn’t keep the chlorine up. I had to add 160 lbs of salt after
adding the Total A. (There is now plenty of salt, above the 3,000 ppm
recommended by the generator manual).
The pool store said that upping the Total Alkalinity would help retain
chlorine. In this case, it seemed to totally zap it. What I am
missing? Does Total Alkalinity kill chlorine?
