Hello all thanks for taking the time to look at my question. I have a
16×32 in ground pool with an 3′ to 8′ hopper end and the past couple of
years the deep sides and bottom have been getting these hideous black
blotches all over the place increasingly getting worse. We’ve been to
all the pool “experts” around the area and they say it’s black algae
and once you get it good luck getting it out. Has anyone ever seen or
had these? If so any suggestions you could give would be greatly
appreciated. One of my suspicions is that there could be a microscopic
leak on the side wall of the liner and water is penetrating underneath
the liner. I’m just not sure, like I said any techniques or hints
would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like what you are describing is black algae. does it feel
velvety? if you use a steel brush and brush real hard, does any of it
come off? if so, its black algae, and the experts are right, good luck
getting it out! The best you can hope for is to control it and not let
it spread, i describe it as pool cancer. left untreated, it will
eventually invade all areas of the pool shell including plumbing,
equipment, and anywhere water is and the spore can attach it self to.
if you catch it in its early stages, there is a chance to treat it. it
must first be scrubbed with a steel algae brush to break open the
protective shell or head to expose it to the chemicals. then you can
use pieces of broken tablets or granular tri chor to put directly on the
infected area. also a good silver algaecide may help with black algae.
Good luck.
