Any opinions on Hayward Tristar pumps?

February 16th, 2007 · 1 Comment

My super II pump is on its last legs, and I’m taking this opportunity to
replace it with a dual speed pump. The Tristar line is Hayward’s newest, and
it appears that due to improvemenets in efficiency, a 1.5 HP high efficiency
tristar has about the same rating as the 2 HP super II (I confirmed with
Hayward’s tech support that this would be a good substitution), and uses
much less power. I have a combination pool/spa, so will use the high power
mode only when the spa is in use.
My concern is mostly with the predicted reliability of the Tristar. The
super II is about 7 years old; I don’t know what the predicted lifespan is,
but I would have expected at least 10 years. We run the filter about 10
hours a day (the house is in Central Florida).

10 hours aday seems like alot of run time. Is it olympic sized???
I am a warranty station for hayward in southern california. The tristar
is there newest pump, but they will also be coming out with a variable
    speed pump later this year.
7 years is a decent amount of time to have had your super 2 last, and
I’m assuming it is just your motor that has gone out. A super 2 is
considered an energy effecient pump and most
people that have a failed motor just replace the motor.
January of 2008, california will require all new pools and replacement
installations to be multi speed or variable speed pumps. No more single
    speed for us.
Hope some of this info helps you.
