Low pump pressure

January 3rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Hello folks, new to this group thing, but maybe it is the way to go. I
have an 8 year old in ground pool. For the first seven years the
Pressure through the filters(cartridge) was a rock solid 30 psi. About
a year ago the pressure dropped to 20 psi. It has been working but it
seems to be getting worse, now averages between 18-20. I figured it is
time to do something about it. Today I pulled the pump motor and
disassembled it, ouch, not a good idea. Looked okay to me. After
breaking a few things I finally got it all back together and
reinstalled. Results still 20 psi. I checked everything I could think
of for clogs or leaks but have found none. I do have some air in the
basket but can’t remember a time when I didn’t. Is it possible for a
motor to work but loose its efficiency, causing this drop in pressure?
It doesn’t sound as strong as it once did, it is an American Products
ultra flow 2hp. I thought I would give it one more attempt before I
call a professional. I am mechanically inclined and usually can fix

anything but this one has my stumped.

Our pump was very old. When Leslie’s ran an add for free
installation, we bought a new pump. It was much quieter, used
much less energy and we got a one-time payment from the electric company.

    Darn, Low Pressure…
I finally proved I had low pressure because of resistance in the
return lines. Two pros could not figure this out for sure. I
created a new return line that is not great, but my pressure is
    wonderful now.
It goes around back of a planter and crosses 3 feet of patio to
put water back into the pool.
