Smoking pump basket

September 12th, 2006 · 3 Comments

I sure got a surprise today when I checked on my green pool (storms
lately), did not seem to be running well, no pressure reading on top
of sand filter, no water moving in pump basket. So I shut it off to
clean out the basket & the water in there was smoking hot!!! I drained
the water & put a hose in the return line from the skimmer first, than
the filter, but it seemed OK. So I took apart the housing for the
impeller, sure enough there was alot of sediment & plant parts around
the metal bushing I suppose not allow the impeller to spin. Cleaned
it all up & put it back together hoping the motor was not fried.
Primed it & it seemed OK, though some leakage from housing (so will
need to add more gasket grease I suppose). Anyone else ever have this
happen to them? Carol.

Never had that happen, but I have to grease my gasket every time I take
    it off the lid.
Hoping for a non fried motor.

The leak tells me you might need to replace the pump seal kit. It’s basically a
gasket assembly that fits around the shaft. It’s a cheap kit and will save your
pump motor. You don’t use grease or anything, it’s a mechanical seal. If that
is the problem and you don’t replace it, eventually you’ll see the leak worsen
and your motor will die. Better to do it than not.

Oh yeah, the pump will get very hot if it’s not pumping water. That will ruin
the seal and the motor if left too long. I definitely suggest replacing the
seal kit. Cost me $7 for a Hayward pump.
