Evaporation

May 21st, 2006 · 2 Comments

Hi! I just joined and I’ve searched the archives but didn’t find
anything quite like my question. If it has been asked, please forgive
me! :-) We closed our 18′x33′ aboveground pool a few weekends ago. We have
several air pillows and the winter cover in place. All plumbing
cleaned and stored. Water was drained below skimmer level.
We’re losing water at about the same rate as we did in July/August. Is
it normal for evaporation to continue at that rate even with the pool
covered?
At this point, there’s only about 24″ left in the pool. Is that
enough? Should we add water? And if so, what about chemicals?
I’d appreciate any and all advice!
Thanks,
Donna in Missouri

    Thanks for responding, Peter.
As I said, it’s an aboveground pool. Do they have anything other than vinyl
liners? I don’t know. But ours IS vinyl.
The climate in Missouri is seldom dry. Moderate to high humidity is the
norm. This week has been warmer than usual, but prior weeks were cool,
    sometimes
    chilly.
During the peak swimming season, we were losing 1-2″ daily. It’s
disappearing about 5-6″ a week now. The pool is 52″ tall, with about 48″ for
    the normal
swimming depth. I would estimate we drained it down to about 40″ when we
    closed it.
The pump and all hoses and connections have been stored for the winter. The

ground around the pool has been moist?, damp?, not really wet, all summer.
    It’s no different now.
Finding a leak from inside the pool is not possible at this point. The water
is cold. Not cool — cold.
Been waiting to call a professional because this being our first season as
pool owners, we wanted to find out if it’s normal or not first from other
    experienced owners.
    Thanks for any help.

I want to thank the group for the great responses I got about what has to be
a leak in our liner. Right now we’re just waiting to see where it stops
draining so we can search for a cut. The pool pro believes it must be a ’slash’
rather than a ‘puncture’ which should make it easier to see. If it turns out to
be a seam, we’ll get a new liner next spring under the warranty.
    Thanks to everyone!
