How long to run the pump?

November 1st, 2005 · No Comments

Hi all,
We’ve recently moved into a home with an inground pool (80,000
Litres). Everything is functioning fine and water chemistry is very
good.
My question is this:
How long should the pump be running when the system is connected to a
gas heater? The former owners had it running on a timer (daytime
2hrs on, 1 hr off & nighttime 1 hr on, 2 hrs off). Our pool supply
guy has recommended that we switch the timer to manual and leave the
pump running 24/7 to prevent damage to the heater (water evaporation
to zero). Is this recommended? How much will this change the
electricity costs of running the pump?
Thanks in advance for any advise you can give. By the way, I’m
located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada so the heater is an absolute
necessity here.
