Hi all,
I’m so happy to have found this group since I have a question as I’m
in need of some guidance.
This summer we had a new aboveground pool installed (18′x52″). I
followed the directions for winterizing, brought in the filter etc..
I now seem to have a few problems which may be affecting the
integrity of the structure of the pool and I’m not sure what to do.
First, the pillow has moved out of the center and to the side of the
pool.
Second, it appears that the sealing cover I installed on the skimmer
hole has let go since I have had water coming out which is now solid
ice.
Third, I was unable to plug the other hole - couldn’t get that
plastic thing off to save myself.
Fourth, we now have a very very thick layer of ice on the top which
is really making the cover stretch (which is where my concern about
the wall’s integrity comes in).
Originally I figured that the cover would ideally sit on the water in
the pool which would in turn support it but now I’m doubting that
since I have water coming out.
Should I loosen the cover to take the stress off the walls? It’s
supposed to warm to the 40s for a few days this week so the
possibility of getting the ice off and making an adjustment does
exist.
I’m sorry for the long post but would be very grateful for any
assistance.
Thanks so much,
Lisa

Lisa,
Did you drain the pool down below the skimmer before putting the cover on?
If the temps do warm up I really doubt the ice will melt without help from you.
A winter cover has a cable that holds the cover down at the edge and the
pillow goes in the middle which you had and you should get some weight bags to
hang over the edge of the pool and keep the cover tight and let the water drain
to the edge.
Be very careful with that ice…………….if it is several inches thick it
weighs a lot and will bowl you over like a car should the side of the pool
break…………it might weigh 250 pounds or more.
Hooking a hose to your water heater drain migh be a good way to help melt the
ice but be careful.
