It probably is a cartridge filter inside the canister. You will need to
unscrew the two halves of the canister to get the filter out and then take it to
a
spa or pool dealer near you and have them look it up in their Unicel book
(Unicel is a manufacturer of replacement cartridges) and once you know what
model
filter you need then order them anywhere you can get a good price. When you
go take the filter with you and also record the model and make of the spa. I
cannot tell you how many times someone has asked for a filter for their spa
and did not have the old filter, did not know who made the spa and could not
even give accurate measurements for the filter.
You also need to find a spa or pool store that has a good book on spa and
pool care. Leslies has a good book but it is a bit dated. The guy who supplied
the information for the book is a pool genius but the references for products
in the book are really out of date.

Balancing you water means adjusting the total alkalinity, pH and hardness!
In that order!
If the plumbing had water standing in it then I would run the system without
the filter (just put the canister back together without the cartridge) with a
high dose of chlorine in it. Dump the water and clean the spa then do your
startup with a new filter.

Thank you for your enthusiasic advice!
Sorry for the lack of specifics. It is a Pacific Marquis
above-ground, indoor. It has a timer, and a cover. I’m not positive
on the material, and I’m not sure what kind of filter it has. How can
I tell? (Sorry, I know nothing about this!)
Ok. I’ve located the filter. It’s a tall cylinder type. It looks a
little old, so I’ll definitely be getting a new one. Any
recommendations for places to order these online? How do I determine
which kind to get? Is it by size and manufacturer?
Do I have to do anything to clean the inside of the works, inside the
pumps and tubes and such? There was water sitting in this thing for
awhile.
Ok, correct me if I’m wrong here. The steps are:
(1) Drain totally.
(2) Clean inside surface with generic household cleaner and rinse well.
(3) Dry and seal with spa wax/sealer.
(4) Install new filter.
(5) Fill with fresh water.
(6) Add chemicals and balance (I’m a little fuzzy on this part.)
(7) Set the timer so the pump runs 2-3 hours a day.
(8) Check chemicals and balance every few days?
(9) Drain completely and clean every 3 months.
Sound right?
Also, I assume I keep the cover on it all the time (except when it is
being used of course)??
What about heating it? The heater appears to have a timer as well.
Do you keep it hot all the time? Or just when you want to use it?
Thank you for your help!
