Anyone know of a place in NJ that will to the install of a solar heating
system for a pool. I’ve found plenty of places that will sell me the parts.
I’v got a two story detached garage right next to the pool. I need to first
make sure the structure can support the weight of the water, and then make
sure the pump can pump the water two stories. Finally, I’d rather get someone
else to crawl around on the roof and setup everything.
Any recommendations of a place that does installs in central NJ (monmouth
county)?
Thanks,
Tony
Tony,
Even in the southwest which is the heart of solar country you are hard
pressed to find someone to install solar pool heating for you. Most systems are
set
up for the DIY and attach directly to the roof which is something I really do
not like. As far as the weight of water most solar panels have very small
tubes so the water weight is spread out over a large area and you are in NJ so
you get snow. There is more water weight in the snow than there is in the
solar collector so I really think that is not the issue and if you are placing
the collectors on a single story garage then unless your system is underpowered
or marginal to begin with then the pump should not be an issue either. What
HP do you have and what is the system pressure on the tank guage?

Two story structure, and my other concern is that solar panels would cause
more snow to collect on the roof. Luckily the roof faces south in the summer
and would get sun pretty much all day.
Anyway, I have a 1.5HP pump, DE filter and the tank pressure usually reads 10
to 20.
Thanks, for the insight,
Tony

Tony,
With a two story you will be hard pressed with 1.5 hp. If you are using the
flat solar panels that are no more than a couple of inches thick then the
additional snow buildup will be marginal. If you are thinking of those
stainless
steel reflector type then yes they will cause a great deal of additional snow
buildup but they are very expensive.

1.5HP is a quite large for a domestic pool, I’d expect you to have
30,000 gallons and 2″ pipework for a pump that size.
It might be able to cope with solar panels on the garage roof, if
there’s not too much else limiting flow, such as narrow piping, a
lift from the pool to the pump, or a small filter surface area…
