Blowing out Return, Skimmers and Main Drain

March 16th, 2005 · No Comments

I live in NJ so it gets pretty cold in the winter.
Can someone email or post the step by step directions to:
1. Blow out Skimmer-I heard you set the multiport valve between
settings and blow out thru the back-wash hose outlet with a shop vac
and then plug the lines. Is this correct?
2. Blow out return lines- Should I drain pool to below the return
line, blow out and then plug?
3. What setting should the multiport valve be on to blow out return
lines?
4. How do you add anti-freeze to return lines?
5. Blow out main drain-I heard you put the shop vac in blower mode
and blow air through the pump basket area-I have a hayward
dial-a-flo valve(3 settings-skimmer, main drain and off). What
setting should it be on?
6. I tried this and could not get any bubbles

to come out of the main drain. The main drain is 7.5 feet deep. Do I
need to worry about the pipes freezing?
7. In NJ, do I need to add anti-freeze to the skimmer lines and main
drain?
8. Is a 2.25HP shop vac good enough to blow out lines? If so, is
their an attachment that can “funnel” the air flow down into a 1 1/2″
pvc Line?
Thanks
