Degreasing & Acid Bath question (D.E. Filter)

March 12th, 2005 · 1 Comment

Pesky first year pool owner here with my usual long list of questions:
Per the instructions from the pool store after I disassemble my D.E.
filter I am to degrease it, give it an acid bath, then dry & store.
1. How do you degrease it?
2. A friend at work says she doesn’t acid bathe it until spring. If
I acid bathe it now, will I need to do it again in the spring?
3. Can the acid be stored and reused?
4. I have a huge filter…how do I acid bathe it, I think I heard
someone mention buying one of those huge plastic garbage cans with a
sealing cover and bathing it in that and then saving and reusing the
solution. Has anyone tried this garbage can method & pros & cons.
5. Does the acid bath still work if it is saved.
6. Is it safe to store it (the acid)?
Thanks for any thoughts & input!

    1. How do you degrease it?
Your pool store has a product that is formulated to remove the suntan lotion
and body oils that get trapped in the grids. Use this a rinse well.
    2. A friend at work says she doesn’t acid bathe it until spring. If
I acid bathe it now, will I need to do it again in the spring?
No, and it does not matter.
    3. Can the acid be stored and reused?
Do not store and reuse the acid. If it has been used discard it. The unused
portion can be stored but you need to protect it from freezing and the bottle
will gas off and cause the metallic items nearby to rust. Acid is cheap and
if you are talking about a big filter you will need most of it anyway. Just
    neutralize it.
    4. I have a huge filter…how do I acid bathe it, I think I heard
someone mention buying one of those huge plastic garbage cans with a
sealing cover and bathing it in that and then saving and reusing the

solution. Has anyone tried this garbage can method & pros & cons.
The huge trashcan is a great idea because the acid will not hurt the plastic.
Use a big trash bag to make cleanup easier. Under no circumstances are you
to save the solution. First it is not strong enough to be of much use.
Second it is a dangerous thing to have around and really not worth the risks.
    5. Does the acid bath still work if it is saved.
It may not and it is a dangerous to leave sitting around.
    6. Is it safe to store it (the acid)?
The acid looses it’s potency over time. Besides it is cheap.
