how do you use the vacuum head?

February 11th, 2005 · 1 Comment

Hi,
I hope y’all don’t mind, but I have a couple of questions for ya.
I’ve decided that I want to eventually maintain my pool myself, so
I’m working at acquiring the knowledge that will enable me to do so.
Question #1: I bought a plastic vacuum brush head for vinyl lined
pools and I’ve pretty much figured out that the hose goes into the
the return water pipe under the plastic skimmer basket. But, on which
setting do I set the pump while I’m using the vacuum head: backwash,
pump, recirculate, or waste? I have a Hayward pump.
Question #2: My new pool service only shows up once every two weeks,
so I need to keep my pool clean between visits. I backwash and rinse
the pump, empty the skimmer basket, put 3 chorine tablets in the
floater, drag the bottom with a leaf net, and use a scrubbing brush
if it needs it. Is there something else I should do?
Also, I’m curious about the ‘recirculate’ setting on the pump. I’ve

never used it. What does it do?
Thanks in advance for the help that is greatly appreciated.
Mike

I’m not a pool pro but I’ll just tell you how I do what you’ve
asked. Look below for answers to your questions…
First of all, a little trick I do to get the pump going right away
when vacuuming…I put all the hose into the pool, hold one end up
to the hole that the water is coming back into the pool. It will
force the water into the hose and all the air out, then I hook up
one end into the return water pipe.
I always vacuum to the regular setting. I think vacuuming to waste
is only used when you’re trying to get rid of something such as
    algae.
I only backwash and rinse when the pressure to my filter has risen 8-
10 pts above normal. Also, there’s a basket in your pump, not your
filter, that needs to be emptied also.
ALWAYS make sure you have chlorine in your pool. I don’t know where
you are but here in AZ with it being so hot, if I let my chlorine go

empty for more than a day I have instant algae.
Recirculates, does just that, recirculates the water bypassing the
    filter system…why? No idea. LOL
