My DIY solar heating is up and running

August 24th, 2004 · 1 Comment

9 meters?
Yeah, about that, maybe more like 10 x 5.5
The tube is MDPE mains water pipe. It contains carbon so it’s UV
resistant. It’s 25mm o/d, 25mm i/d
Be warned, it’s not easy to work with. You can see my coil looks a
bit scruffy in places, this was because it is very stiff and wants to
retain the shape it had while on the roll it was delivered on. I
should probably have investigated other types of pipe more carefully.
But hey it works.
Yeah, the pump makes a slightly annoying high pitched noise whereas
it’s quieter if not enduring back pressure. It’s been suggested that
I convert the coil into several parallel runs. Not this season though!
No problem.
BTW - I went for a swim last night, 21C is a bit sharp getting in but
at 8pm it was warmer than the air temperature and I got used to it

very quickly. Nice!
