Considering using bleach…

June 5th, 2004 · 1 Comment

We moved into this house last August and used our 23,000 gallon
fiberglass pool for about 6 weeks before closing it. We have opened
it, and it just finished filling. We are considering using bleach
this year instead of chlorine, and I have a few questions. How much
bleach will I need and how often? Is the liquid better, or do you
prefer the powder form? What else do you use in your pool? What do
you do to shock it? Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks!

    Janey,
What do you think bleach has in it? Chlorine!
Household bleach is about 6% available chlorine which means it is 94%
something else and do you want that in your pool?
Liquid chlorine is about 12% available chlorine and because it is based on
sodium there is a lot of salt in it.
Sodium Dichlor runs about 55% available chlorine and is good for a fiberglass
pool because it desolves rapidly. This can be used to shock as well as for
regular chlorination. The downside is that it must be put in by hand unless
you spring for an expensive feeder.
Chlorine tablets are about 90% available chlorine but the tablet can cause
damage to the fiberglass surface if you are not carefull. Plus side is that
you can use an inexpensive feeder for it.
