solar reels and solar covers

April 30th, 2004 · 1 Comment

I’m planning to purchase a new solar cover reel and solar cover for
my inground pool. Any advice on brands or types on both of these
items?

What part of the country are you in? If you are in the southwest expect your
solar cover to last less than the manufacturer warranty period and if you are
in the northeast expect it to last longer. Funny but the very thing that
your solar blanket does for your pool kills the blanket.
    Solar Blanket tips,
The blanket is designed to heat the water, ONLY! All of the other bennies
are when the blanket is on..
The blanket will help with evaporation, and to keep dirt out when it is on
but it is not designed for that purpose so when the water is warm enough the
    blanket comes off.
The cover that comes with the blanket is to keep the blanket from destroying
itself when on the reel. Use it!
If you have a pool service that uses gas chlorine expect the blanket to fall
apart in one to two years. High chlorine levels will turn it into paper very
    quickly.

Bad water chemistry destroys your blanket along with everything else.
Don’t drag the blanket off the pool. The bubbles do not like concrete.
My experience is that most residential reels are garbage and may last two
seasons. Get a commercial reel. Even the mose inexpensive commercial unit
will cost four times as much as a home unit but you will never need to buy
another reel and they operate reliably. Most blankets are built the same the
only difference is the thickness of the plastic and the warranty. Go
someplace where the warranty is through them and not throught the
manufacturer. This will save the hassle of having to send the blanket back
    should it die.
