Door alarms

April 20th, 2004 · 2 Comments

In order to pass inspection on my new pool, I’m required to install
alarms on all of the house doors leading to the swimming pool area.
In my case, that’s 12 doors! I’m all for preventing the tragedy of
accidental drownings of children. But since it’s just my wife and I
living in the house, we don’t feel a need for a 110 db alarm which
blares every time you enter the house from the outside or when you
forget to de-activate it when going out to the pool. Consequently,
we’d like to immediately remove the alarms after passing inspection.
This creates two questions:
1. How can avoid the cost of all those alarms? Does anyone have any
that they’ve disconnected and would like to sell me?
2. How can I avoid putting nails in my walls and door jambs? I’ve
heard that the inspector won’t approve the alarms it they’re merely
attached with double-back tape. And besides, double-back tape will
mar the finish almost as badly as nails.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer me.

    Hey Bob,
Do what everyone else does. Buy them and then return them. As a manager of
a pool supply store for several years I have has many a talk with homeowners
about the issue of door alarms. As far as the holes, unless you have
    wallpaper just repair them.
My personal opinion is that anything that makes noise everytime the door is
opened will become tyned out by the very people who should be listening to
it. On some sunny summer day after you have heard the alarm constantly for
the last four hours you will wonder was that a kid going out or in.
The only way to prevent a kid from drowning in your pool is a solid barrier
around it and you there watching when the kids are in the water.
One other thing. The alarms sold by RadioShack have a key for turning them
off. In Tucson,Az the inspectors would not approve them because of this.
    Yours may be different.

    Bob,
Home Depot has a very good return policy an will take them back but be sure
    they are in original boxes.

Have fun but would an alarm system for the house do the same thing?
