a new pool owner here — want info on barrier…

Hey you are wrong! You bought a 1 year old pool with a house attached!
Solar is a good method to heat your pool but be aware it is not for everyone.
It will not heat a spa. Depending upon the weather in your area it may not
be efficient during those times you want heat in the pool because of cloud
cover or temp. It requires a large area of roof that is south facing and
near the pool. Running pipe up to a two story roof may require a booster
pump and if you need to dig up your deck to run the pipes the cost may also
be very high compared to the savings. In addition some homeowners
associations may have bylaws against solar panels on the roof. Heat pumps
for your pool are just like the heat pumps for your house just basically an
air conditioner in reverse. They work well and with the recent increases in
gas prices they can be an alternative worth looking into. Gas line can be
expensive to install but a 50 amp service is cheap in comparison but a heat
pump just like solar may not be for everyone. The up front cost is high for
a unit and when the air temperature falls below about 55 degrees they are

very inefficient. For use all year gas seems to be the only alternative that
can heat a pool in the middle of winter and heat a spa as well. Yes, gas
will eat your wallet but so will an electric pool heater.
As far as adding a spa to your pool it can be done and the only thing that
needs to be done to the pool is where the spa connects a section will need to
be hammered out for a spillway from the spa to the pool. The equipment will
need to be upgraded and some valves installed but you could add an elevated
spa next to the pool. A portable would be cheaper even an expensive
portable.

    Har!
Well, I forgot to mention we live in South Florida, so it’s not like
    we’re heating it too much!
But this is what we’re aware of! LOL
Thanks for the info. That helps.

I used to live in Tucson, AZ. In winter which lasts about a week we needed
to heat the pool. Heat pumps in your area would be a good alternative for
heating the pool but it still would not heat a spa in winter. Cantar makes a
    good automatic cover.
