Eventual question below will be about the diameter of the gas line
required to run the pool heater (180 to 200 foot run). Live in NJ.
Local Pool store sized a 350000BTU heater for my pool. Wanted to
have it installed, but, up to me to get a plumber to run the gas line.
(Pool Store recommended) Plumber is telling me I need to have a 2
inch gas line put in, from the meter. This line must connect before
any other gas connections (like into house). This is quite a run
(about 180 feet) and quite an expense! He was telling me 2 inch line
before he even knew the distance from the meter to the pool.
Anyway, I have a detached garage with a 1.5 inch gas line running to
a heater there. Heater in garage and heater in pool would never be
used at the same time (I can guarantee it). Only need to run 80 feet
(across and along inside of garage) from garage heater to where pool
heater would go (right outside back of garage). Total footage of 1.5
inch line would be almost 200 feet total (about 120 + new 80).
Anyone know how to properly size this? Paying for 180 feet of burried
2 inch pipe vs 80 indoor feet of 1.5 inch pipe is quite a big deal.
Plumber is telling me he has had people damage their heaters because
they can’t get enough gas with anything less than a 2 inch pipe.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi this is from the Raypac RP 2100 manual. For 335KBTU you need 1 1/4 line
from the meter up to 150 feet. If you want I can give you the site and the
manual to look in.

I hope you have this figured out already, but in most cases, the
heater manuel will only give you a reccommended line size, but it
would be best to call your local gas company and have them come out
and inspect your existing line, let them know what size heater you
have (BTUs), and they should be able to let you know if you need to
upgrade, they should be able to do this for free also. Danny
