blowing out the lines

January 30th, 2004 · 4 Comments

Would anyone care to give direction for blowing out the lines in an
in-ground pool as part of the winter closing process? I have been
doing it successfully for 5 years now, but I always worry all winter
if I have done it correctly.
I drain the water below the return lines and then blow the lines
using a blower/vac connected through the skimmer. I cap 2 outlets
and then blow out the third, changing the caps around until all have
been cleared. Then, I cap them off and pour the red antifreeze down
the hose connected to the skimmer and blow a quick blast to send it
down. When I see antifreeze coming out the returns, I cap them off
and then I drain the sand filter. Then I remove the pressure gauge
and bring it indoors for the winter. I also pour some antifreeze in
the pump and housing. The equipment is housed in a unheated cabana.
Does this procedure sound appropriate? I live in Michigan, so
freezing is a concern.

I really appreciate all the advise I have picked up from the good
folks here. Thank you so much.

Sounds good so far! Do you cover the pool for the winter to keep it clean?

of algecide and shock the pool before covering it.
Thanks so much. Maybe I won’t worry so much this winter.

Maybe some stain and scale preventative might be a good idea as the water
ages the hardness builds and the drop in temp will cause it to collect on
pool walls. It is a real problem in the southwest.

I have semi-closed the pool for the first time but ran into a snag.
I went to get my husbands “super-duper” “contractor quality” 100+
dollar shop vac and guess what? There’s no place to plug into that
blows air!! I am going to check with my son who is away and see if
they have one but meanwhile is there an adapter you can use so that
you can use an air compressor to blow out the skimmer and return
lines? Even if I don’t go that method this year it might be a nice
    way to go next time.
    Thanks,
    Sue
