Sorry, the countries 2nd biggest fair
is going on 2 miles away and this thread
got away from me.
My local pool store said I could add some
D.E. to my sand filter to make it work
better. And recommended flocculant.
I have a 24′ above ground pool with a Hayward
Powerflow pump and a 19″ Jacuzzi sand filter.
I switched from a Hayward EC-40 I was NOT
happy with. We got the pool with the home
last year and right away had to replace the
liner because it was a H.U.D. home and they
drained it. So it shrank.
It’s been nothing but trouble trying to keep
it clean. Living in the country next to a cow
pasture doesn’t help AT ALL. Lots of dust, bugs,
& leaves. We use shock once a week, run the
filter 8 hr.s or more per day. And we have an
inline clorinator which I fill with 3, 3″ tabs
every few days.
I replaced all the hoses and use a Hayward
Aqua Bug at least twice per week. I backflush
daily when I start my filter, if I don’t I see
a big cloud of green emerge from it. The D.E.
comes out in the backflush. I figure it must be
bigger than 40 microns since you can see it!
I would just like the 3 micron efficiancy of
a D.E. filter without the trouble. I’m going
to seek out alternate ways to clean over the
winter while the pool is closed. The Slime
Bag looks good, and it’s not far from my home.
Thanks for all the help here by the way, it’s
nice to have a place to get answers.
Adding D.E. to a sand filter

How to almost get DE filtering efficiency without the DE. Personally I
recommend a multicartridge filter. Hayward and Pentair both make excellent
multicartridge filters. Yes, the price is going to be high but with a 300
sq. ft Hayward you should not have to clean it but two to three times per
year given the conditions you describe. A 24 round AG pool is the same as a
small IG pool so you should treat it like one. Get rid of the AG equipment
and go with something serious. You will save money in the long run. 80% of
keeping the water clean is your filtration system skimp here and you will pay
many times over some where else.
