I recently had my pool refinished with blue 3M Colorquartz aggregate
plaster. Almost immediately stains began appearing. The worst stains
are from earthworms, and acorn stains are nearly as bad. Dark, DARK
brown, and indelible. I now have an automatic cleaner (which I
didn’t have before), but it doesn’t always get the debris before a
stain happens. And there are already a bunch of nasty stains.
The water balance is fine. I’ve tried direct (underwater)
applications of muriatic acid and chlorine. These lighten the stains,
but only by about 30%, AND they bleach the color out of the quartz
crystals in the plaster. Also, the lighter areas of plaster in the
shallow end are turning tan (where they were once white). I think
that may be due to the chlorine floater that’s always in that end of
the pool. A vitamin C tablet rubbed directly on those stains removes
them, but only temporarily, and it too lightens the blue in the
plaster.
Does anyone have any suggestions for removing earthworm and/or acorn
stains from plaster? This was a very expensive refinishing, and the
bottom of my pool looks terrible. Thanks!

What does the company that refinished you pool say? Have them contact the
manufacturer. Two things that I feel have never been compatible trees and
swimming pools. And while some of the new finishes look great when new they
are more trouble to maintain. Give me good old plaster. Notice I said old
plaster not what they are using today.

Thanks for your response. The company that refinished my pool was an
absolute nightmare. Irresponsible, dishonest, and nasty. At this
point, there’s no dealing with them. I will try contacting 3M though,
to see what they have to say. I’ve been thinking the only thing to do
will be eventually drain the pool, and either paint over that
once-beautiful plaster, or just have the bottom painted or tiled. I’m
wondering if fibreglas sealant would work, although I know it won’t
look great over blue plaster. If anyone else has any ideas on this,
I’m listening. Thanks again.

What part of the country are you in. My wife and I just moved from Tucson,
AZ to Florissant, MO. I am in the retail pool supply industry and we get to
hear all of the horror stories about bad plaster jobs and unreasonable
companies. There was one in Tucson that was really bad but they were the
biggest. I guess it is the same all over. It gives the pool industry a bad
rap when all we want you to do is have fun with your pool. Would you put up
with this from your boat dealer. I can just see it you have major work done
to the hull of your boat and the first time you take it out the boat sinks
and the company says it is you fault you must have done something wrong and
after you raise the boat we will look at it and make a determination. How
long do you thing that dealer would remain open? But in the pool industry it
happens all the time. Sorry but this type of stuff and I can think of worse
things to say really chaps my butt.
