I have a white plaster pool with a couple of rust stains from
something metal that was dropped in the pool, and a couple of stains
from red clay dirt on the steps.
I was told to place clorine tabs over the stains and let them bleach
them out.
How long do I leave them?
should I put in 6 or 8 and get all the stains at once and let my
clorine level go sky high or should I just try one or two spots at a
time?

Yes that is correct. The tabs will not damage the plaster.
