Nightmare remodel job

May 24th, 2003 · 1 Comment

Hi all, I just joined this group and I’m glad I found you! :-) We bought our house about 4 years ago (hubby and I) and the inground
pool is probably as old as I am. I’m 28. :-) There is cracking, it has obviously risen or settled at some point
and we can hear hollow points in the sides underneath the marcite.
(I believe it’s marcite) The tiles are cracked, the main drain is
clogged and for the past several years it has merely been a natural
pond breeding tadpoles. :-) Now that I have it drained and mostly clean (pressure-washing is
tomorrow) I am not quite sure where I should go. I can’t afford to
have major repairs done by an actual pool contractor, so I have a
neighbor who knows what he is doing helping me a bit. My main
questions are:
What kind of resurfacing should I use (marcite, diamond brite) after
I break up the hollow parts and knock off all the cracked areas?

What kind of pool tile should I get and would it help seal/cover if
I placed it lower if I have all that damage?
A few people have obviously told me it would be more cost-effective
to fill it in, ;-), however it is 8ft deep at the end and rather
large. (though not quite olympic-size) I would like to enjoy it for
as long as possible without having to refill as much as I did when
we first moved in.
I know this sounds daunting, but we are willing to tackle it! (I say
that *now*..) Any suggestions, helpful hints and general support
will be most appreciated. :-) Sincerely,
Melody, in Altamonte Springs, FL

    — In homeswimmingpoolowners@y…, “spikeaddicted”

contractor. You live in Florida…where is your water table? If it
is above the bottom of the pool your are in danger of it doing more
damage by thew pool rising more. If it has risen before it was
because someone drained it when the water table was to high. Your
pool is a boat with the water on the wrong side. That water is as
heavy as an 18 wheeler. Ok enough. You stated cracking, how bad?
Fine cracks or somthing that you can see in? Hollow spots are where
the plaster has pulled from the gunite and they can be patched by
knocking out the old and replacing it with a hydraulic cement. Use
your garden hose and a drain bladder to unclog the drain. Be careful
do not use a snake! As for the tile put it back where it was and why
did it crack? Because the gunite under it cracked or was it
mistreated somehow? As far as the surface if you can patch the

plaster and the shell is OK then use an epoxy paint on it. It will
be much cheaper than a plaster job and will be much of a problem for
a do-it-yourselfer to apply. Save your pennies and do a real rehab
professionally. If you fill it in punch a big hole in the bottom of
the shell or it will hold water.
