I can not afford a pool heater but I was thinking of just getting a
black tarp and putting over the pool to warm the water , is this a
bad idea? Will this work?

I am in Georgia , have a 30′X 52 above ground , I have taken a 1/2″
line off the discharge of the pump before it returned to pool and
run it accross the roof of the house in 200 foot of 1/2″ sprinker
pipe ( black poly ) then it returns to pool , on a 90 degree day with
full sun the discharge on the pipe is 110 degrees, and I keep a solar
cover on at night and when not in use. Water temp is usually above 90
my 2 cents
and the pipe is 7 bucks per 100 feet the sun is free

I really did not think this would be this popular , I got the idea
from a buddy in
Florida
The pipe coming back to the pool from the pump and or filter
I cut it apart and put tee in the line and on one side of the tee I
reduced
It down to ½” diameter and installed a valve to cut it off.
In the end toward to pool I put another valve so I can restrict the
flow
to the pool and force the water through the ½” pipe. You have to
close
this valve at first to get the ½” pipe running because of the
water
wants
to go path of least resistance to the pool, the open about half way
after
water starts flowing through ½” poly pipe.
I then adapted the ½” pvc valve to the ½” poly pipe
I then ran the poly pipe underground , up the side of the house
Across the roof 200 foot of it , then back down the wall and into the
pool
Every piece can be bought at any hardware store that sells pcv pipe
I realize most pools are set with flexible hosed , I ran mine with pvc
Because I do not trust flex hose. I do not know how much longer this
Will extend swimming , I ran this as an experiment last year on the
ground
With 50′ of pipe , this year I installed permanently. I also run
this
off a spare
pump I have , but last year ran it with my filter pump.
If you need more help let me know
I have a word digram I drew , it did not show up for some reason
I can email it to you if you like

In areas subject to fire pumping water from pool to roof might be a
good idea to wet down roof.
Water pressure might be decreased due to use by fire trucks so a
pool source might save house assuming you have electric power

A copy of your diagram would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Will this work just anywhere or where we have mild winters with not
many low temps?
Will you send me your diagram? Thanks a lot.
