To cover or not to cover

March 25th, 2003 · 1 Comment

On warm days is it better to remove the cover? And then put it back
when the sun goes down?

    Hello, Nick.
If you have a floating bubble cover, it is better to keep it on the
water whenever the pool is not in use. A substantial amount of solar
heat will pass through to warm the water underneath.
The major factor here is that taking the cover off allows
evaporation, and this cools the remaining water significantly.
Removing the cover allows bright light into the pool and this will
increase the risk of an algae attack - algae can multiply at
    explosive speed in bright light.
Finally, when the cover is off, the rate of loss of chlorine rises
(by how much depends on how well stabilised it is) so you will find
yourself using more, and perhaps having wider swings in free chlorine
concentation - depending on how often you check it and correct it.
    Steve.
