Wrinkle in One Year Old Liner

January 27th, 2003 · 2 Comments

I’ve noticed a wrinkle in a one year old pool. I
called the place business that installed the pool to get
it serviced. The owner stated to me eventually all
liner pools would get a wrinkle or two, in addition, he
states it won’t hurt anything but the looks. He also
stated the only way to get it out would be to drain the
pool and reset the liner. The liner is 30 mils thick.
Any comments either validating his info or debunking
it would be greatly appreciated

Many liners form wrinkles towards the end of
their life, but this should not be the case for a liner
only a year old. You do not say where in the pool the
wrinkle is - once filled wrinkles don’t usually ‘appear’
as the water pressure keeps the liner pressed hard
against the sides / walls. I’ve known them to appear once
or twice where the pool is used by large groups of
bathers jumping in ‘bomb’ fashion together as this causes
such large variations in water pressure that the liner
can move a little before the pressure is reapplied.
In the vast majority of cases I’d agree with him
that the problem is with appearance, rather than
performance, provided the excess is not so great that it can
‘fall over’, though there is a slightly increased risk
of it suffering damage by bathers.<br

crease is on a wall and / or close to an inlet / outlet
flange - where, with scuba gear it can be removed if
small - he is correct in saying that removing it would
first require the pool to be emptied.

    Hello,<br
wrinkles, however it’s unlikely the fault of the installer.
Two things may happen, one there may be ground water
(assuming the pool in in-ground) which can lift the liner
and when it resettles, it may not go back into place
correctly. Another thing that may cause wrinkling is low pH.
Check your pool’s pH often, if you use trichlor tabs it
WILL lower your pH unless you take countermeasures by
adding soda ash, borax, or baking soda to the water. If
you post a picture perhaps I can identify the cause
    of your wrinkle.
